Chapter 11

For the next week, Kelsey devoted most of her work hours to Cheyenne and Zach’s wedding. This necessitated two phone calls with Bryce, and each conversation left her nerves tingling at the sound of his husky voice.

But it was the daily texts since their late-night shopping trip that really made her feel all warm and glowy—texts that had nothing to do with Magnolia Gardens. Sometimes they were simple things like what’s your favorite soda? Other times they were more flirtatious, and usually corny, like are you a Dalek? Cause you’ve been rolling through my mind all night. And sometimes they were deep. Questions like what do you miss most about Jadyn?

Their second run-in at the grocery store had just made her like Bryce even more. He’d been teasing and kind, and she’d loved shopping with him.

Why did Jadyn have to have liked Bryce? If she hadn’t, he’d be fair game.

He doesn’t want you, Kelsey reminded herself. He’d wanted to go out with Jadyn. Kelsey was just a convenient replacement. That was the real issue here. Not her pact with Jadyn.

But Bryce was texting Kelsey, not Jadyn. In fact, the only times he’d brought up her twin in the last week had been when asking Kelsey how she felt about something. The vast majority of their conversations had been about other things. They’d discussed work, of course. But Bryce had also asked Kelsey a hundred questions about herself. He’d flirted outrageously, texting all sorts of nerdy pickup lines. It had been nice.

But every time she giggled over one of those cheesy lines, a little voice whispered that he’d liked Jadyn first. And Kelsey looked exactly like her twin.

On Friday, two weeks after her fateful date with Bryce, Kelsey went with Cheyenne to Magnolia Gardens for a tasting. All of their catering services were on site, which was convenient since Kelsey knew most of her regular caterers would be long booked for August.

When they got to Magnolia Gardens, Bryce was nowhere to be seen. A pretty young girl who barely looked old enough to have graduated high school led them to a small room on the second floor, where a round table was set with a white tablecloth and a short floral arrangement.

“Please have a seat,” she said with a smile. “The chef will bring out the appetizer options in just a moment.”

“Where’s Bryce?” Cheyenne asked, echoing Kelsey’s own internal question. They’d texted just last night about their superhero rubric—they’d decided plucky sidekicks should factor into the overall score—and he hadn’t said anything about missing this. Since Bryce had been present when they looked at centerpieces a few days ago, she’d assumed he’d be here, too.

“He got called away for a meeting, but he’ll be by in about an hour,” the young girl said.

The disappointment that flooded over Kelsey was both surprising and unsettling. Why was she being so weird about this? It wasn’t like Bryce wasn’t coming. And even if he wasn’t putting in an appearance, why should Kelsey care? She was the wedding planner, and she and Cheyenne could pick the menu without his input.
